"Surrogates" Movie Review

This is a very unoriginal themed movie that is only watchable due to Bruce Willis action talents. While the idea behind Surrogates is quite interesting, it is far from original. The movie is set in the not to distant future, where around 98% of the world's population is living their lives through a surrogate, meaning a robot that looks just like you, that allows you to live your life without ever leaving your house. All you have to do is sit in a chair, in the safety of your own home in your PJ's, hooked up to your surrogate through a computer program and let them live your life for you. You are able to see and feel everything that you would feel if you were actually out in the world instead of your surrogate...and the best part is, you are in no danger of getting hurt or contracting any diseases. And, as an added bonus you can make your surrogate look however you choose allowing people to be exactly who they want to be.

So, needless to say, in surrogates, no one is ever quite who they seem. And, as for the leftover 2% of the population that has refused to live through a surrogate have bombarded themselves off in a surrogate free zone where they can live their lives as real people. They live in surroundings that look about as cleanly as a good old hippi commune. The non-surrogates are led by "The Prophet" who has promised them that change is coming, after discovering a new weapon that will not only eliminate a surrogate, but will also kill the person operating it.

While there are several interesting concepts and ideas brought to light in this movie, but in the end, the surrogates movie is more like a crime movie, rather than a science fiction phenomena. This movie is not filled with very many truly innovative ideas, and aside from the scattered bit of amusing scenes, surrogates is not a cinematic masterpiece.

The one glimpse of entertainment in this movie, is the acting quality that Bruce Willis brings to the table. He has a knack for turning great movies into instant classics (ex. Sixth Sense and Die Hard), and he has the ability to turn a mediocre film into a movie that is at least enjoyable to watch.

So while Surrogates is not 2009's best film of the year, it is somewhat enjoyable and if you get the chance, I would pass up on watching it.
